WHO WE ARE
The Bar council of Punjab and Haryana is the statutory body established in the year 1961 under Section 3 of the Advocates Act, 1961. The autonomous body is bestowed with critical regulatory duties and functions to be performed in order to facilitate the justice delivery system in India by ensuring proper servility with professional ethics and at the same time safeguarding the rights, privileges and interests of the Advocates.
The State Bar Council elects one representative to the Bar Council of India as its Member-Representative and also elects Chairman and Vice-Chairman for the Council. The tenure of the entire Bar Council is for 5 years and it is headed by the Chairman of the State Bar Council. The Honorary Secretary of the Bar Council is the Administrative Head of the Bar Council. There are 25 different Committees of the Council which look after the respective functions of the Bar Council.The election to the office bearing posts is held as per the provisions drawn up in the statute. The counting involves elimination by preferential voting basis and the 25 members securing highest votes in order to get elected to the office for a period of 5 years.
The Advocate general of Punjab and Advocate General of Haryana are the ex- officio members of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana.
The Bar Council is required to discharge its statutory duties and one most imperative duty of the Bar Council is to admit lawyers on its roll as advocates. Over the years, the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana has enrolled around 1.3 lakh advocates on its roll from the states of both Punjab and Haryana. The Bar Council has a disciplinary jurisdiction over all the Advocates on the roll of Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana.
This Bar Council regulates and maintains the standards of professional conduct and etiquette for the Advocates.
